Transforming Traditional Science Labs into Future-Ready Learning Environments
Forest Park School District 91 partnered with JP Architects to modernize two aging science laboratories at Forest Park Middle School, creating learning environments that better support today's instructional methods and tomorrow's educational opportunities. From the outset, JP Architects worked closely with District administrators and educators to understand curriculum goals, teaching strategies, and the evolving needs of students.
The resulting renovation reimagines the traditional science classroom through flexible layouts that encourage movement, collaboration, and hands-on exploration. Adaptable furnishings and thoughtfully organized instructional spaces allow teachers to seamlessly transition between lecture-based instruction, small group activities, laboratory experiments, and project-based learning. A key feature of the design is a movable operable partition between the two science labs that enables the spaces to function independently or combine into a larger learning environment for special programs, demonstrations, and collaborative activities. When closed, the partition serves as a writable teaching surface, maximizing instructional space and functionality.
Modern laboratory workstations, integrated technology, updated utilities, and improved storage solutions provide the infrastructure necessary for contemporary science education. Dedicated areas for experimentation, collaboration, and demonstration create an environment where curiosity and discovery can thrive, helping students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills through experiential learning.
Material selections throughout the renovated spaces prioritize durability, safety, and long-term performance. Easy-to-maintain surfaces, laboratory-appropriate finishes, and carefully selected color palettes create an atmosphere that is both calming and energizing. Graphic elements inspired by science and the natural world reinforce educational themes while contributing to an engaging and inspiring learning environment.
The completed renovation provides Forest Park Middle School students and educators with flexible, future-ready science classrooms designed to support exploration, innovation, and academic achievement.
